More than $10 trillion has been spent on advertising in the U.S. since the invention of the radio.
Can you guess how much of that $10 trillion+ U.S. ad spend went to the consumer?
If you guessed any number other than 0, you would be wrong.
During the last 100+ years, as advertising agencies and media enterprises have relished in advertising profits, the consumer has gotten nothing.
Zilch.
Nada.
Well, nothing in terms of monetary compensation.
Consumers do receive some stuff. I mean, consumers are generously given ample amounts of propaganda, a few bits of entertainment and, at times, coupons for products that they don’t need.
But, actual money?
No, don’t be silly. Consumers don’t get that.
Advertising money has always been for the likes of the ad agencies, the publishers, the radio and television producers, the broadcasters and, more recently, the social media and tech behemoths.
And they have done very well for themselves indeed.
In fact, they have built financial empires selling just one product - YOU!
By serving as the merchandise that they peddle to advertisers, you foot the bill for their lavish lifestyles.
It was you who paid for Rupert Murdoch’s yacht and private jets.
It was you who financed Mark Zuckerberg’s 59 million dollar mansion on Lake Tahoe.
It was your capital that made Ted Turner one the largest private landowners in the United States.
I could go on and on.
But I won’t.
Because it really doesn’t matter anymore.
Although you will never get a portion of the $10 trillion already spent, thanks to modern innovation, you will soon be able to partake in all future advertising revenue - as both content creators and content consumers.
AI will enable you to produce and distribute high quality media content - even full length feature films - without paying or kissing the ring (or extremity) of a Hollywood gatekeeper.
And web3 will ensure that, regardless of whether you are creating or consuming content, you are receiving a piece of the ad revenue action.
This consumer evolution - from media product to media earner - will not only inspire a renaissance of creativity, it will fuel the greatest democratization of wealth in the history of humanity.
